Before you start

You need:

  • a BigCommerce store — any Stencil theme works, Cornerstone or any other. If your theme puts the cart totals somewhere unusual, you can choose where the widget goes in step 4;
  • to be the store owner, or a user allowed to install apps;
  • about ten minutes. Nothing changes on your storefront until the last step.

Running a headless or Catalyst storefront? The fee and the protection box still work on BigCommerce's checkout, but the box on your own cart page has to be added by your developer — email us and we will send the snippet.

1. Install the app

In your BigCommerce control panel open Apps › App Marketplace, search for Navidium Shipping Protection and choose Install. Review the permissions and confirm.

The app registers its webhooks and adds its widget script to your storefront. The widget stays switched off: your cart and checkout look exactly as before and no fee is added to anything.

2. Choose a plan

The app opens on its plans. Every plan starts with a 14-day free trial: choose one and add a card in the secure Stripe form shown inside the control panel. You are not charged until the trial ends, and cancelling before then costs nothing. The trial is once per store; a store that has paid before, or comes back after uninstalling, starts straight on the plan.

Plan Price after the trial Orders
Essential $29.99 / month up to 500 a month
Growth $49.99 / month up to 1,000 a month
Enterprise $99.99 / month unlimited

Change plan or card, or cancel, any time from Billing. Uninstalling the app cancels the subscription straight away.

3. Set your price

Open Settings › Fees and choose:

  • Percentage of the cart (with a minimum and maximum fee), or fixed tiers by cart value;
  • whether protection is on by default (shoppers can opt out) or off until they choose it;
  • whether the fee is taxable, and with which tax class.

Fees are set in your default currency and converted with BigCommerce's own exchange rates in other currencies.

4. Style the widget and turn it on

Open Settings › Widget. Pick a design, your colours, icon and wording; the preview shows what shoppers will see. Where to show places it on the cart, the checkout or both; if your theme needs it elsewhere, choose Custom CSS selector and give the selector of the spot you want.

When you are happy, set the kill switch at the top to On and save. The widget appears under the cart totals and in the checkout order summary straight away, and the fee shows as its own line in the order total. Switch it Off at any time to stop the programme without uninstalling.

Customers file claims at a page of your own. Copy its link from Claims › Customer claim portal (or Settings › Claim portal & emails › Who can claim) and add it to:

  • your theme footer (Storefront › Themes › Customize, or a web page under Storefront › Web pages),
  • your order confirmation email,
  • your shipping or returns policy page.

Make the portal yours in Settings › Claim portal & emails: your logo and colour, the wording of each step, the reasons customers can give, the resolutions they can ask for, and the emails they receive.

6. Check it works

  1. Add a product to your cart on the storefront — the Shipping protection box appears with the fee.
  2. Place an order with protection on (any test or offline payment method).
  3. In the app, Orders lists it as Protected within a minute.

7. Who hears about claims

Settings › Claim portal & emails › Emails to your team decides who is emailed about new claims, failed refunds and claims left waiting. With no addresses listed, the store owner is.

Uninstalling

Uninstall from Apps › My Apps. The widget and webhooks are removed and your subscription is cancelled at once. Your settings, orders and claims are kept for 90 days in case you come back, then deleted. If you reinstall, everything is as you left it except the widget, which starts switched off again until you turn it on in Settings › Widget.
